How did your interest in oncology evolve over time?
My interest in oncology deepened as I worked alongside few prominent oncologists in Delhi. Although my initial focus was on fundamental medical issues, my involvement with oncology patients gradually drew me closer to the field. I pursued specialization, competing for limited seats at tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai under renowned oncologist Dr SH Advani. The landscape of oncology in India underwent a transformation, with the number of medical oncology doctors rising significantly over the years. Here in Odisha also there has been a great evolution in health infrastructure and skilled resources along with technology.

What motivated you to establish a cancer treatment hospital in Odisha?

The pivotal moment occurred during my brief fellowship at Houston's MD Anderson Medical Center. Observing their unwavering commitment to cancer research and treatment motivated me to make a similar contribution in my native Odisha. As a result, Sparsh was established in 2007 with the goal of closing the cancer treatment gap in this area. With help from my family and friends, the hospital started on its path to offering efficient and kind cancer care.

For cancer patients, financial obstacles are a major issue. BSKY-style programs have been essential in providing patients with financial assistance. More patients are seeking the necessary treatment as public awareness rises and government initiatives gain traction. Sparsh also places a strong emphasis on giving patients with limited financial options, such as the chance to actively take part in clinical studies. My mentors Dr. Purvish Parikh, Dr. Reena Nair, Dr. Sripad Banavali, Dr. Sudeep Gupta, and Dr. Sauren Das taught me a lot and gave me a lot of help. With a note of strong ethics and data keeping, we just passed US FDA inspection as well as Indian FDA inspection a few years ago.
How do you approach the physical and emotional challenges faced by cancer patients?

We proposed and planned the After Cancer Treatment (ACT) clinic shortly in Odisha thanks to collaboration with professionals like Dr. Purna Kurkure, my Guru and Guide. This clinic is meant to help those who have finished their cancer treatment but are still dealing with mental problems and other difficulties. In addition to providing comprehensive medical care, our aim is to ensure patients' overall well-being and quality of life.
The oncology career of Dr. Ghanashyam Biswas is a monument to his unwavering commitment, empathy, and quest of perfection. His influence is seen throughout Odisha's healthcare system as well as inside the walls of Sparsh Hospital. Patients who are treated by him receive not just advanced medical care but also a healing touch that encourages empowerment and hope. The story of Dr. Biswas serves as an example of how one person's dedication may change the way a community treats cancer. From studying oncology as a student to supervising four oncology students annually, his life has come full circle.
